Well there’s one thing I can say about this place; there are a lot of baby birds that have been hatched around here. This summer we have had Bluebirds, Purple Finches, House Wrens, Cardinals, and Blue Jays. There is currently a second brood of birds in our Bluebird house, Purple Finches in the hanging basket on our front porch, and House Wrens in a planter in the front yard. I have been very careful watering the flowers each day to avoid disturbing the baby birds. Today, I decided to remove the hanging basket from its hook and show Isabell the growing baby birds. She thought they were so cute… and they are. I let her have a quick look then returned them to the hook where they were previously hanging on my front porch. While hanging up the basket, the hook broke. The flowers fell to the ground and the baby birds that were resting comfortably in their nest, fell to the ground as well. I felt terrible. Mandy and I quickly scooped up the flower and the birds, and put them back in their nest. I went inside and watched the nest to see if the mother would return. She did. Thank goodness. Hopefully they will be big enough to leave the nest soon.

Arnold was the first visitor of the day. He arrived around 7:30 as he usually does on Saturday mornings. Arnold and David go to Georgia every Saturday to get a carton of cigarettes at a discounted price. David usually plays the poker machines while he is there, so he is not really saving any money. He doesn’t know that I know about his gambling. It’s like a little secret that David thinks I know nothing about so I don’t say anything about it.

Little David, Maddie, and Dakota arrived and swam in the pool to get some relief from the heat. 107 degrees today in Chattanooga. Another record. He brought a watermelon. We will eat it tomorrow.

Kay stopped by and talked to Mandy about having Austin and Cole come over. She wanted to take them to the Aquarium and said that she would go by Melissa’s house to see if they wanted to go. She left after talking to Mandy for about 10 minutes.

Grace arrived with Madi, her Mom (Bethany), and her fiance’ (Fernando). They visited for a while and talked about getting a Lab when they marry. They are a sweet couple.

High temperature of the day, 106 degrees! A record high set today in Chattanooga.  I continue to fill the pool with water on a daily basis as the water quickly evaporates each day. I’ve checked it for leaks, but none are apparent. I just haven’t seen temperatures this high before so I’ve decided that as quickly as I put water in the pool, it is released into the dry atmosphere. Fireworks may be cancelled this fourth of July as any little spark could set off a fire. I may stay in today. It will be a good excuse to finish some homework.

Began the morning setting up for the swim team auction that would take place tonight. Left around 1:00, got a Subway sandwich, and went home to finish preparing for the night. Melissa, Austin, Cole, and Ben were the only visitors today. However; I did leave off a visitor Thursday. Kristen, Melissa’s friend, came over and swam for a while. She even posted some pictures on Facebook, and I neglected to mention her in the blog.

Not too much to talk about. A great night at the auction raising money for the swim team. David and I returned home around 10:00 with a small pool table which converts into an air hockey table. It’s pretty neat and it works. Isabell was the first one to try it out and spent most of her time poking baby doll bottles into the pool pockets on the edge of the table. David and I played a game of air hockey. We got several pucks in the slots, and then gave control of the table back to Isabell. For 40 bucks, I hope it’s used more than for the purposes of putting numerous items in various holes around the table.

Co-sleeping? Who does that anyway? Well…we do, though much hush-hush from Grace about it is endured on a daily basis. She doesn’t dare want any of her friends to know that she still sleeps with her parents. Grace is 9 years old and getting too big, physically, for 3 people to fit comfortably in a king size bed. Last night when Cole spent the night; David, Grace, and Cole claimed the bed while I was getting a homework assignment completed. After finishing around 10:00, I was ready to relax in bed and watch the 10:00 news. That was not about to happen as the bed was full of sleeping bodies already taking up the space where I occasionally sleep. I went to Grace’s bedroom, put her hamster in the laundry room, and turned on the television. I went to sleep soon after lying down, but was restless all night. When I woke up, I told David about how uncomfortable my night’s sleep had been and that I didn’t sleep well. He said, “Well, you need to get a new mattress.” Funny. I need to get Grace out of the bed before she goes to college.

My Mom, Steve, Kaitlyn, Dakota, and Jillian visited today to get some relief from the heat. They came early to avoid some of the hot sun. It was hot. Mom also brought along some knitting needles and yarn. I guess she thought we would have time to knit knowing there were going to be 8 kids in the house. The knitting lesson was put off for another day, but we had a great time eating fresh pineapple and watermelon. Grace went home with Nana and Pop only with the agreement that Smoky (Nana’s cat) would be locked down stairs through the night. They left around 1:30.

Melissa came over along with Austin and Ben. They had fun jumping on the “jumpolene” and playing on the computer. They left around 3:30.

Arnold came over and he and David were reminiscing about an old friend they knew who use to rob telephone booths for a living. They laughed and joked about his car riding lower to the road in the back while carrying 5 gallon buckets full of change in his trunk upon his return from Atlanta. His deeds eventually caught up with him, and he spent some time in jail. It’s funny the things we remember.

The morning began with Madi and Cole being the first visitors of the day as they had spent the night. Melissa and Austin arrived around 10:00 and began the morning with coffee and cinnamon rolls. A quick trip to Wal-Mart to purchase several drinks for a party that would take place during the day. 2 boxes of drink pouches, a case of water, a box of 24 fudgesicles, a box of 24 flavored popsicles, and a 6 pack of beer. Just from the list of grocery store items, the kids attending the party will outnumber the adults.

Friends began arriving around noon. April and Bailey were the first to arrive and were very anxious about swimming in the pool. April talked about her limited amount of time being exposed to the sun this summer, so she and Bailey lathered up with plenty of sunscreen. They both left around 3:00, beginning to look a little pink.

Cindi, Ruth, David, and Blake arrived shortly afterwards bringing a 2 liter of orange Fanta. Who would have thought it would be such a hit. It was the beverage of choice for the kids.

Loren, Grant, and Turner were the next visitors to arrive. Turner carried drink pouches to the pool deck where the cooler full of drinks was already being used. It was a hot day, but a great day to spend time with friends.

Little David visited for a while then was taken to Merv’s by Mandy. She seems to spend a lot of time taking him from place to place.

Trish, Shelby, and Kaitlyn were the last visitors to arrive. Shelby had left her bathing suit here after her last visit and was anxious to put it on and get out to the pool. She stayed in the pool nearly the entire time.

4 Little Caesar’s Pizzas, Crazy Bread, and Italian Cheese Bread fed the hungry crew after a few hours of swimming. The last visitors left around 6:00 just before swim practice. Needless to say…all kids drinks were consumed and 3 beers remained in the cooler.

Today, we went to Chester Frost Park to swim in the lake. Harlee went with us too. The temperature was 90 degrees and there was a light breeze. It was nice. Soon after the kids were swimming, Austin yelled, "Look, I caught a fish!" He had caught a brim with his bare hands. We couldn't believe it. He was so proud of himself. After everyone saw his accomplishment, he tossed the fish back into the water.

It wasn't long before another kid caught a fish... a much bigger fish. It looked like a small mouth bass. He was holding it with both hands and the fish was flapping eagerly trying to get away. Wow! That was crazy.

Well...not too long after that, Grace caught a fish with her hands as well. After that, I began to wonder about the quality of the water that we had been cooling off in. We all began to talk about flesh eating bacteria, staff infections, and E coli. Just a few minutes earlier, we were jumping around in the water laughing, flipping each other off floats, and diving under the water to find shells. Suddenly, our faces were full of question. Surely there was no pollution or bacteria that could be killing the fish, or making them swim slow. Maybe the water temperature was too warm. We all agreed this was the probable cause behind all the slow moving fish. This seemed to justify it and we all felt better.

We ate sandwiches, fruit, pudding, and chips. It was a nice afternoon.

Melissa, Jeff, Austin, Cole, and Ben came over after we left the lake. After swim practice this evening, Madi came home with Grace and will be spending the night. Cole wanted to spend the night too. 2 guests in the house tonight.

Another hot day! Temperatures here in Chattanooga are projected to reach 105 degrees by Saturday.

A lot of running around today to prepare for tonight’s swim meet. Grace missed swim practice this morning and slept until 8:30. That’s late for her. When she finally woke up and saw the time, she quickly got up and said, “I have to help Jo bathe her dogs.” She got dressed and went next door. She and Harlee returned about an hour later. Jo gave her $20.00. Between losing teeth and bathing dogs, Grace is making a killing this week.

Later in the afternoon, Melissa, Austin, Cole, and Lucas visited; playing on the computer and swimming in the pool. Kay stopped by to visit with Austin and Cole for a while. She spoke about how God has changed her life.

Finished off the day preparing to go to the swim meet. Went to the garage to retrieve the cooler and fell up the steps while returning. I hit my shin so hard that Melissa and Mandy had to carry me back into the house. I was a few seconds away from passing out as the pain was so intense. I quickly began making phone calls to friends as I knew I wouldn’t be making it to the swim meet. I thought I had fractured my shin bone. Grace would require some adult supervision, and my duties as treasurer would require some instruction. In a matter of minutes, all was taken care of. Grace was off to the swim meet, and I was resting my leg.

Several hours later, the pain in my leg was subsiding. I missed Grace’s swim meet for the first time and feel guilty. There will be many more to come. Grace went home with Madi after the swim meet to spend the night. Will meet them at Chester Frost Park tomorrow for a day at the lake.

Took some ibuprophen and went to bed.

Sunday, June 24, 2012

A very quiet morning was a great way to begin the day. A cup of black coffee and the newspaper in hand began my Sunday morning routine. This morning was different that many others because David and I were alone. The sounds of birds chirping and the newspaper crinkling were nice sounds compared to the typical sounds of running feet through the house, slamming of cabinet doors, and arguments over toys.

After a nice breakfast of bacon, eggs, grits, and toast; I decided to complete some homework then wash my car. I have to use my time wisely to get things done. Went out to wash my car and the spray nozzle was missing. I looked everywhere and it was no where to be found. David made a quick trip to Wal-Mart to get a new nozzle, then he was off to pick up Grace.

Little David arrived with Mandy around 11:00. He asked to wash his clothes and said, "I brought my own laundry detergent." I never really said it was okay, but I guess he knew I didn't mind. Arnold visited for a while as well.

Steve returned the sander and some unused boards that Chris needed for a project. He talked about Chris for a while. He said, "Chris never calls when he's out of town." Steve said this upset Wendy as she would like to hear from him while he is away. Chris did mange to find time to post some pictures of himself and friends on Facebook. He is growing up.

Jason brought Isabell home around 4:00. They had her birthday celebration today at Jason's parents house. She returned with paper, markers, and lots of play dough. She had a great time. Mandy prepared dinner while David, Grace, Isabell, and I swam in the pool. It was a great day to spend time with family.

Saturday, June 23, 2012

A hot day in June! The thermometer in my car read 97 degrees around 3:00 this afternoon. I spent much of the day by the pool kicking shoes out of the way each time I entered the back door. Madi was the first visitor of the day as she had spent the night. I was startled awake last night at 1:23 AM by the blood curdling scream coming from Grace’s bedroom. It was Isabell. She had decided to sleep with Grace and Madi but woke up missing her Mom. I quickly carried her to Mandy’s room and she was a sleep again within minutes. I was too.

Arnold arrived around 7:30 AM while I was busy cooking breakfast. Steve Webb arrived shortly afterwards and parked his truck in the front yard. David visited with them for a while until Mandy announced that breakfast was ready. David came inside, and Steve left with Arnold leaving his truck to sit in our front yard until they returned.

Madi went home around 11:00, and Grace was eager to get her things together to spend the night with Papaw Glenn. One thing that I can say about Grace is that she is not afraid to ask anything. One day at the ball field while watching Austin and Cole play ball, Grace was distracted when listening to another Mother call her daughter "Momma." "Come on Momma, catch the ball." "Get a good hit Momma." Grace turned to the Mother getting her attention and asked, "Why are you calling her Momma when you are the Momma." The Mother simply answered, "That's just kind-of my nickname for her." Grace must have been satisfied with her response because she shook her head with approval and continued to watch the ball game.

Upon mine and David's return home, I arrived to find Gail, Nathan, and Loretta swimming in the pool. We had told them that they were welcome to come swim any time. David even said, "You know where the key is." It was so hot today, the water was barely refreshing. They left around 5:00.

Melissa, Jeff, Austin, Cole, Dalton, and Kalel arrived around 5:30. Melissa and I went to the grocery store and got steaks that would be grilled for dinner. They left at 8:30. It has been a busy day, but David and I have the entire house to ourselves. Isabell is spending the night with her Dad and Mandy is out with Little David. I can’t even remember the last time this has happened, and all I can think about is lying in the bed to watch television.

Friday, June 22, 2012

I woke up this morning thinking about the events of yesterday. Soon after consuming two cups of black coffee and a bowl of Lucky Charms I went back to the apartment complex armed with several McDouble’s and some sweet tea. I couldn’t stand the thought of those boys going hungry no matter how many bad choices they had made. Grace, her friend Madi, and Isabell rode with me. Grace and Madi wanted to take the food and drinks to the boys. Soon after they were standing on the stoop where the police officer stood yesterday, the boys brother came to the door. He took the burgers and drinks and sat them inside the doorway. He yelled out toward me, “Hey, I got your bike back.” He held up a finger motioning for me to wait a minute. In just a few seconds, he came out of the door with Austin’s orange bicycle. I told him, “Thanks, you’re a good kid.” He smiled. We loaded the bike into the car and all sat quietly for a few minutes. I hadn’t planned on getting the bicycle back; I just wanted to buy some food for some kids I thought might be hungry. On our way home, Madi said, “It made me feel good to give him that food.” And I replied, “me too.”

As I drove up to the house with Austin’s bike, I began blowing the car horn repeatedly. I was so excited to show Austin his bicycle. As I got it out of the car, he looked closely at some of the changes that had been made. The stickers had been removed, but he was glad to see metal Huffy tag had been left on the front. The tires were new, with white walls, and there were more spokes on the wheels that I could even begin to count. The valve caps on the tires had even been replaced with decorative 8-balls. He sat on it, rode it around a few minutes and said, “I think I like it better.” We all laughed. Mandy said, “Hey Austin, your bike got 'tricked out' and you didn’t even know it.” Melissa, Cole, and Austin’s bitterness toward the boys who had stolen their bikes had been transformed into laughter when they looked at the new additions that embellished Austin’s Huffy.

“Pay it forward.” If we do nice things for other people, and they do nice things for other people; then a cycle is created: a cycle of goodness. And that in itself is a great thing.

Melissa, Austin, Cole, and Kalel visited for most of the day. Swimming, jumping on the trampoline, and eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Brandi came by to pick up Kalel around 2:00, but he asked to spend another night with Melissa. She said, “Okay.” Madi is spending another night with us as well.

Arnold visited this evening and is talking about getting a Kindle Fire for Nathan. He enjoyed seeing that it was very similar to an iPad and a lot less expensive.

Stealing…Is it ever justified or are there reasons it might be forgiven? While riding up Dayton Boulevard today and just past Melissa’s house; Cole’s bicycle was spotted lying against a brick wall next to the doorway of an apartment. Austin and Cole’s bikes had been stolen a few days ago. Melissa was furious. We drove to the police station to alert them as to what was going on, and to get some help getting the bike back. We followed the officer back to the apartment where the bike was still propped against the wall. There was a young boy sitting on the steps of the apartment with his hands folded across his knees. He remained seated while Melissa and the police officer got out of the cars and walked to where the bike stood. The officer asked the boy if the bike was his. He said, “No, Chris stole it.” At that time, the officer asked, “Is that the only bike Chris stole?” The boy replied, “No, he stole an orange bike but took the wheels off and threw the frame in the creek.” Melissa was very upset and knew that Austin would be disappointed when he discovered that Cole’s bike was the only one that would be recovered. Needless to say…Chris was never found and the boy changed his story several times. The officer talked to a neighbor. She told him that the boy and his brother were left home alone most of the time and that she often fed them because they had no food in the house. Hearing this news made me sad. It had me questioning the reason behind their motive for stealing the bikes. Was he/they bored? Did he just want a bike? Had his mother taught him that it was wrong to steal? With no one to supervise him throughout the day, was he just doing something to occupy his time?

Stealing…justified? No. Can the boy and/or his brother be forgiven? Of course. Leaving there with the boy and his older brother sitting on the steps of the apartment complex, I began to feel empathetic for the lives that they had become so accustomed to living. Why did I want to go to the grocery store and buy them a refrigerator full of food? They just stole my grandkids bikes! Maybe just maybe, if someone did some nice deed for them, they would transfer this good deed into making good decisions in the future. I pulled out of the parking lot looking at them in my rear view mirror while I was filled with sadness, not hate. Maybe I will take them a burger tomorrow.

Steve Webb cut our grass today. He spent an extra 30 minutes picking up the clutter of kids toys that decorated the back yard. Mandy often tries to pick things up before he arrives, but today he caught us off guard. He usually comes on Friday’s.

Melissa, Austin, Cole, Brandi, Kalel, and Lilly visited for a while just before Austin and Cole’s final game of the baseball tournament. They lost but have had a great time learning to play ball their first season. Grace and I went to her swim meet. We won! 4 more swim meets and our season is over as well. Madi came home after the swim meet and will be spending the night with Grace. They swam until 10:30 and got ready for bed. They should sleep well.  Little David visited for a while then went to his apartment on Duncan Avenue.

Why do we, as adults and parents, spend so much of our time trying to conceal the identity of fictional characters such as Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy? Maybe because it’s what our parents did when we were kids, maybe because we see the excitement in our children’s eyes when they see Santa at the mall, or maybe because we want to be a part of this make believe world for just a little while too. Just like when we read a book or watch a movie that takes us to an exotic or imaginary place; it’s fun to disconnect for just a little while from the day to day activities that clutter our daily lives.

Grace lost a tooth yesterday, placed it in a plastic bag, wrote a short note on the baggie, and placed it under her pillow. The note said, “Tooth Fairy, What color are your wings? I’ve always wanted to know?”

Wanting to encourage her excitement and curiosity about the Tooth Fairy, I immediately went to the kitchen, retrieved some paper and a pen and began writing the Tooth Fairies reply. The note said: My wings are blue, my hair is gold; you lost a tooth, so I am told; I leave this treasure, beneath your head; while you sleep, with nothing to dread.

I left the note beside the coffee pot making it easy for David to replace the note along with money, for the tooth. He saw the note but chose to have a cup of coffee first. Grace woke at an unexpected time and saw that the Tooth Fairy hadn’t come. Trying to correct his mistake, David distracted Grace and quickly placed the note and money under her pillow. $20.00! He must have felt guilty. Grace was excited but soon discovered her tooth in the plastic bag lying underneath the bed and began to question why the Tooth Fairy hadn’t even taken her tooth. She even said that she saw her Dad put the money under her pillow. Caught in the act! After David tried for several minutes to convince Grace that he hadn’t put the money there; he finally gave in and said, “Well, that was from the Daddy Tooth Fairy, put your tooth under your pillow again tonight and the real Tooth Fairy will come.” I wonder how much the Tooth Fairy will pay tonight. Grace never said anything about the note that was with her money. At 9 years old, I think she still wants to believe in the fictional characters that bring a sense of curiosity and imagination to her mind; but reality tells her that no man could ever deliver a million toys to all of the children in the world in just one night. I think I will be sad when she stops believing.

Melissa, Austin, Cole, Kalel, and Lilly visited today, swimming in the pool and jumping on the trampoline. Arnold stopped by to borrow a table saw, and Little David visited for a while then went to Merv’s. He said that he may go by Melissa's and get the van to sell for scrap iron. The kids would be so upset if their priceless tanker was sold for a mere $300.00 and crushed to a pile of rubble. Hopefully, he will change his mind.

In addition to the human visitors that come to my house, we have an array of dogs that visit as well. Steve and Wendy visited just before 6:00 PM. They were picking up a sander for Chris, who is completing a project that will be carried to Nashville this weekend and entered into a Science competition. I don’t know all the details about that. Steve and Wendy had their two dogs with them: Junebug and Cocoa. Junebug wandered around the yard for a while then returned to the garage where we stood, while Cocoa remained close the entire time. Grace let Lucy (our Daschound) out of the fence to visit.

Melissa invited her friend, Ashley along with her 5 kids, over for a swim. They arrived around noon and left at 2:30. Brandon, Cash, Caden, Olivia, and Slade seemed to enjoy themselves. It was a hot day. It’s funny how kids don’t feel embarrassed about asking others questions that we as adults may feel uncomfortable asking. As soon as Caden arrived, she asked, “can I take my shirt off when I swim in your pool?” I replied, “sure.” As adults, we should all feel this comfortable. Not with taking our shirts off, but with feeling comfortable enough to ask questions.

Arnold arrived just before Grace and I were off to swim practice. After practice, we went to the ball field to watch Austin and Cole’s game. David was there with Isabell. She enjoys playing with her friend, Emma. Austin got a home run. He was so excited! They won the game and will play again Thursday.

Today, I will be in Grace’s bedroom completing a 1500 word essay about Learning Disabilities that I have absolutely put off until the last minute. It’s due today. Well, at 3:00 AM pacific time. There may be time during the day to visit.

What can you buy for $50.00 these days? An outfit, several grocery store items, a weeks’ worth of electricity, ¾ tank of gas, or night’s stay in a Quality Inn. What about an adventure filled clubhouse with roof accessibility, places to hide, a real steering wheel, removable seating, and storage space. That’s what you can get when you buy a 1995 Ford Astro-Van.

Little David purchased this van several years ago. It has been a means of transportation all around Chattanooga getting him and members of his family from one place to another. About 6 months ago, he got a flat tire which required him to replace the flat tire with the spare-a donut. After David had neglected to register the van, and with the new donut that looked out of place; David decided to park his van at Melissa’s house until he could replace the tire and register his vehicle. 6 months later, and the van continues to sit on the lawn at Melissa and Jeff’s house.

It began as curiosity for Austin, Cole, and Grace. What’s in the van anyway? Do the windows go up and down? Can we see over the steering wheel while pretending to drive? That was all it took. An open door (literally) to a new adventure. With toy guns, backpacks full of ammo, snacks, toy cars, and markers; the van has become a clubhouse that has transformed into a tanker. Anyone with a gun can lie on the roof keeping a lookout for bad guys, the windows can be rolled down just enough to poke a rifle through the top, and the seats can be removed creating more space for many kids to hide. What fun and a great time for any kid involved to explore their world of creativity.

Not to worry about the seats getting ruined lying out in the rain or anything; Jeff carried the back bench seat into the house and Austin and Cole are using it as seating while playing their X-Box 360.

Cole had spent another night, and caught a lizard. He was surprised that when the lizard latched onto his finger, it didn’t even hurt. He carried it around proudly for a while then released it into the woods.

Harlee watched Grace for a while. Grace was so interested in watching “My Strange Addiction” that she couldn’t be pulled away from it long enough to go to the grocery store. Imagine that!

Melissa and Austin arrived around 6:30 to pick up Cole to go to their baseball game. They won and will be playing again tonight. This is their tournament week.

Little David came over while David, Grace, and I were at the swim meet. He visited for a while with Mandy and Isabell. Jo came over as well. We lost the swim meet to Ooltewah.

Mattie came home from the swim meet with Grace but went home about 10:30. She said she was feeling sick. I hope she’s okay.

Arnold was the first visitor of the day. I think he is on the same schedule as David. To bed around 9:00, and up at 5:30. When he arrived, they were busy hooking the truck to the camper so it could be moved to the back yard to be washed before we leave for the mountains in just a few short weeks.

Yard sales… to young children, they are an array of old toys and treasures that can be found at no other place than in front of someone else’s yard spread out on a table, or on a sheet stretched across the ground. To adults, they are a bargain waiting to be found or the item you always wanted, but never found time to purchase.

Yesterday, Melissa gave Grace, Austin, and Cole 3 dollars each and sent them next door to the neighbors yard sale. Many toys were for sale that they had played with on numerous occasions. When they are for sale, however; they are open property to the first eager buyer. They searched through the items looking for the perfect toy that for just a few dollars could become their own. Melissa said they had a great time.

Jeff and Melissa came over just before Austin and Cole’s baseball game. Jeff was proudly wearing a .50 Nascar shirt Austin had purchased for him from the yard sale. He wore it as if it had been purchased from a pricey department store. It was Jeff’s Father’s Day gift. They spent the rest of their money on two baseball caps, a jacket that was about 12 inches too short in the sleeves, some sippy cups and a piggy bank for Isabell. Their selfless deeds almost made me cry. They had spent all of their money buying gifts for people other than themselves.

Many visitors today. Mandy said we would top 200. I agreed, and we laughed. Melissa, Austin, Cole, and Grace were the first to arrive. Grace had spent the night with Melissa. Grace was so excited to wish her Dad, “Happy Father’s Day,” and to give him the shirts that were recently purchased at Wal-Mart. He loved them.

Mandy gave Dad a hand held bug zapper. I was the first one to get a jolt. It didn’t hurt, but everyone was scared to willingly touch the screen while the electricity on the zapper was activated.

Harlee visited for a while, and helped tape down the princess table cloths that decorated the patio tables.

Kay arrived to pick up Austin and Cole around noon and returned with them at 2:30. Just enough of a break to prepare potato salad and cole slaw to go with grilled hot dogs this evening.

Jason brought Isabell home around 2:00 and acted like he was a welcome member of the family (Isabell’s Dad, but Mandy’s ex-husband). He stayed for a while playing with Isabell’s toys in her room and even took a short nap on her bed. He asked Mandy if it would be an imposition to stay for the party. Mandy kindly said, “yes, it would be an imposition.” And he left.

A cookout for Isabell’s birthday and Father’s Day celebration began around 5:00. My Dad and a woman who wishes to remain anonymous, Steve, Wendy, Chad, Chris, Melissa, Jeff, Austin, Cole, Laurie, Jackson, Maggie, Sophie, and Emma attended the gathering. The kids swam, ate hot dogs, cake, and ice cream. The evening was fun. Everyone left around 8:00, and Cole wanted to stay another night.

Steve (my stepdad) brought Isabell’s gift by yesterday. Yet another visitor left off the days tally. Larry (a friend of Mandy’s) came over at 11:00 last night. They sat under the gazebo and drank a few beers.

So many visitors today that I had to write them down.

2 additional visitors yesterday, 19 today; 204 visitors in all. We were right.

Saturday, June 16, 2012
And so, another day of summer break has come and gone with an additional 9 visitors today.

Isabell will be 4 years old Monday and we will have a birthday/father’s day celebration for her and several Dad’s tomorrow here at my house. I shopped for over an hour and after choosing the perfect birthday gifts then returning them to the shelf several times over, I ended up getting markers, coloring sheets, a large floor puzzle, and a princess chair. I hope she likes them.

Loretta, Nathan, and Gayle (my sister-in-law, great nephew, and Loretta’s friend) came over to swim. Mandy and I were away shopping when they found their way onto the back porch, spotted the pool key, and helped themselves to a swim. They had a great time and left their signatures in the gazebo to show they had been here.

Some of the names in the gazebo are beginning to fade. When I looked closely, I could see where Austin had written his name for the first time and where Mandy had written Isabell. I saw family nicknames and where silly bubble shaped words had once been colored brightly. Dates and names begin to fade, but memories never do. Well…in some cases they do. My grandmother passed away several years ago after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I can’t imagine how my Mom must have felt knowing that so many of the memories that they shared together simply disappeared. My grandmother was a terrific seamstress, knitter, quilter, and could crochet anything. She must have provided my Mom with the skills necessary to complete these tasks too. Knitting is her favorite past time. She can knit blankets, sweaters, scarves, and hats. She really has a knack for knitting. I guess…when all is said and done; anything we pass down to others can be saved, such as signatures on a gazebo; or skills passed down from one generation to another.

Melissa, Jeff, Austin, Cole, and Ben visited after their baseball game tonight. They ate spaghetti then swam in the pool leaving behind fresh signatures written in navy blue.

Friday, June 15, 2012

While sitting in the stands and breathing red dust, I looked toward the dugout where Austin and Cole were sitting and noticed a sign that read, “visitors.” The irony of the word stood out and I punched Mandy on the arm and pointed to the sign. We both smiled at each other.

I thought about the guests that have visited my home, and of the homes I have visited. Driving or flying sometimes for long distances to visit others. It’s not enough to talk on the phone, email, or even Skype; as humans, most of us desire the one on one connection we feel when we see each other and share stories while in person. The stories we hear and the expressions we see on another’s face when they laugh or cry are feelings that will last a life time. I like to laugh.

Melissa laughed the other day until she cried when telling a story about Jeff, her husband, using the bathroom and forgetting to flush the toilet. Cole went into the bathroom shortly afterward and shouted, “Hey Dad, you pooped out an N.” I laughed until I cried too. In this family, stories have to be retold; so I called Mom and told her about Cole’s findings. She replied in an approving manner by saying, “Well… Dr. Oz says you are supposed to poop out an S.” Oh goodness, the stories we tell…and retell.

Melissa, Austin, and Cole visited today providing yet another day full of laughter.

Arnold visited for a while and asked if Loretta, her friend, and Nathan could swim tomorrow. I assured him this would be fine.

The week’s activities have caught up with me and I have found very little time to write. Horse camp, swim practice, team pictures, a swim meet, trips to the grocery store, laundry, cleaning the house, cooking, paying the bills, and the list goes on. I returned home from Cleveland last night around 10:30; cleaned out the trunk, piled all wet clothes together, and washed the cooler. I went straight to bed but ended up in Grace’s bed to escape the constant scraping from her toenails down my calves.

Cole was the first visitor of the day as he had spent another night with Nanar. We slept together and went to sleep the previous night after Cole asked me a round of questions: What’s your favorite color, what’s your favorite animal, what’s your favorite food? After we chatted for a few minutes, we were both off to sleep.

Mandy left shortly after we woke and picked up Austin and Ben. Melissa was putting color on a friend’s hair and would be over soon after she finished. She arrived around 2:00 with Kristen dropping her off.

David’s friend (Jack) arrived around 3:00 and visited for a while talking about how long it had been since he had visited.

When waking this morning, David told me about the events of yesterday evening. He let Austin, Cole, Ben, and Isabell ride the riding lawn mower, giving everyone a turn to drive. He talked about the cool air in the backyard while they all picked handfuls of blackberries and ate them until they were nearly ready to burst from eating too many. I was almost jealous thinking about how relaxing his evening must have been compared to mine. Somehow though, I think I am draw to the confusion and quick world that encompasses by daily life.  When all was said and done…

Another 6 visitors today,  170 in all.

Creativity…that’s one thing I can definitely say about some of the visitors that come to my house, and about some of the members living in my house. My daughter, Mandy, has a knack for creating hair bows from ribbon, making needed repairs to clothes, and transforming shirts into dresses. She did not get that talent from me, anyway…Melissa had asked Mandy to hem a long dress for her making it a knee length summer dress. Mandy removed about 4 inches of fabric at the bottom of the dress and began hemming the dress to the perfect length. Meanwhile, Cole found a perfect use for the brightly colored fabric circle he found lying on the floor. He wrapped his find around both hand rails of the back porch completely closing off the path up or down the steps. With this part of his project complete, he quickly ran to find the additional needed accessories. When he returned, he placed a ball in the middle of the material, pulled back, and let the ball go. The ball shot at least 10 feet across the back yard. A sling shot! I would never have guessed. He shot balls from his sling shot until he got tired of chasing them.

Melissa, Austin, and Cole visited. I cooked pork chops, potatoes, fried squash, coleslaw, and sliced tomatoes. It was delicious. With my new found energy from a big dinner I was able to clean inside the dog fence cutting the grass and scooping up poop. Both dogs had a bath, and I watered my flowers. Afterwards, while sweaty and hot, I jumped into the pool with my clothes on. The kids thought I was crazy, but were quick to join me with their clothes on too. It was a fun evening.

Arnold came to visit too talking about how good he is feeling. His tumor has shrunk another 2 cm. We are truly thankful for that.

Harlee visited for a while, and then Jo came over with Angus. She stayed just long enough to light a cigarette then returned home. We had just begun to clean the dog lot and she must have decided that we were too busy visit.

My morning ritual… a cup of coffee, shower, cleaning my ears with Q-Tips, and preparing to get ready for the day. After cleaning my ears, I simply laid the Q-Tips down on the bathroom vanity and began removing the towel from my head. Grace came into the bathroom while I was drying my hair. We were talking about the days upcoming activities over the loud blowing sound coming from the dryer. Without noticing, Grace began cleaning her ears with Q-Tips and asked, “Mom, are these wet?” I immediately replied while trying to contain my laugh, “No! Those are the Q-Tips I just used.” Her face squinted at the thought of using the same Q-Tips I had used. She quickly threw them down and pretended to throw up. “Gross,” she said. I have laughed all day thinking about what must have been going through her mind when she discovered she was using, used Q-Tips.

Horse camp again today for Grace and practicum hours for me at a local school. Melissa, Austin, and Cole visited for a while today and left to go to a ball game at 7:00 that was later canceled.

Another missed visitor from yesterday. Nancy (my sister) arrived around 8:00 PM to pick up Jillian after the days incidents. She looked at my new car and the fence that now contains my dogs. It was a nice visit, just too short.

Monday, June 11, 2012
This morning at 8:45, Grace was dropped off in Ringgold in front of a barn with the smell of manure lingering in the air, monsoonal rains, and near a stall with a sign in red stating, “Do Not Feed, Do Not Pet, Do Not Tease.” It was a stallion who the guide said was temperamental. We left him alone.

When I returned home, a quick tally of money received from the last swim team concessions sale, a trip to the bank, then to CVS for some toilet paper. Don’t know where all that goes. I may keep track of that as well.

Melissa, Austin, Cole, and Kalel came over. The day was boring, wet, and dreary. The only relief from being inside the house came when all the kids decided to play in the garage.

David and Brandon arrived around noon to try and find some relief from the rain. Brandon visited for a while on the porch, talking about how much Isabell has grown.

Picked up Grace and Jillian (her cousin) from horse camp. It was still raining and I cringed with fear about mud from their boots getting in my new car. I did take a garbage bag and all boots were placed in the bag, and then put in the trunk.

Returned home, began cooking dinner, and informed David that he would be responsible for taking Grace to get her team picture made at the pool while I finished dinner. Within 30 minutes I began receiving calls from David and Ken (the swim team president). I had the swimmers shirts in my trunk and they needed them for the team picture. I quickly jumped in the car with Isabell and drove to the pool making it just in time to distribute shirts to the swimmers who had not already received theirs. They were all wearing their team shirt for the picture.

Harlee came over for a while this evening and visited on the back porch. She later went home.

Grace, Jillian, and Isabell must have been bored. Grace decided to turn on the hose, spray down a place in the yard where very little grass grows, and created her own mud slipping slide. It was a mess! I had no idea of their actions until they stood at the back door with mud dripping from every inch of their bodies. Where was I? I was completing a homework assignment in the quiet confines of my home with no one around to distract me.

Jillian and Grace got in the shower, I put Isabell in the bathtub, and Mandy cleaned the clothes that could be salvaged, with a hose. Mud stains filled the tubs. I tossed away Grace’s shirts and Jillian’s shorts. The trauma was more than they could handle and Jillian decided to go home.

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Morning came at 6:36 AM when the red digital lights shone brightly in my eyes in the dark room. I turned and began tapping David on the back to wake him for work. He abruptly said, “What?” I replied, “It’s 6:30.” He said, “It’s Sunday.” To which I replied, “Sorry, I thought it was Monday.” By that time it was too late and David was up making coffee to prepare for the day.

Maddie spent another night and was up shortly after our first cup of coffee. Drove down to retrieve a newspaper from the stand and discovered from the front page of the paper that it will continue to rain through Wednesday. Arnold arrived just I got through the obituaries. He sat on the back porch with David. I began to cook the Sunday morning breakfast of bacon, biscuits, gravy, and eggs. Hope the heart holds out. Sure don’t want to give up my gravy.

Grace begins horse camp tomorrow and will have her team pictures made tomorrow night. Might be a gloomy day… or a gloomy week. Harlee, Cheyenne, and Jo came over this evening. I made a cake and most of it was consumed by the 8 individuals in the house. It was a pretty quiet day. Two trips to Wal-Mart in my new car and an hour nap this afternoon. Feeling great.

Saturday, June 9, 2012
Sitting here in an old blood assurance shirt with Miss Clairol on my hair trying to disguise the inevitable signs of aging, I try to recall the visitors from yesterday. Arnold arrived around 7:30 bringing a 22 rifle that David had agreed to buy from him. The rifle was loaded and Arnold wanted to make sure that all bullets were dislodged, so he began firing the rifle to clear the barrel. He shot nearly 8 rounds of shells into the backyard while standing on the back porch. Needless to say, the sound of the rifle firing bullets from its chamber woke the second visitor of the day (Maddie, who had spent another night) and all other sleeping members of the house.

Mandy, Isabell, Maddie, Grace, and I left the house around noon. We dropped Isabell off at her Dad’s and were off to Village VW. Stayed for about 4 hours, leaving there a Chevrolet Traverse and returning home with a VW Passat. Love it!

News of the new car quickly spread. When we returned home; Jo, Harlee, and Cheyenne were eager to take a ride in the new car. Melissa, Jeff, Austin, Cole, and Kalel (a friend of Austin’s) arrived around 7:30 and wanted to ride in the new car as well. More miles were put on the new car driving it around the block than those put on the car driving it home from the dealership. Anyway…it’s exciting.

While Jo was here, she told me that my blog was getting boring. Thought I would tell the reason behind her not sleeping last night as that might add more humor to the blog, but remembered the adage, “What happens at home, stays in the home.” Although she doesn’t live here, she does feel like family.

Today is Sunday, and the visitors have already begun to arrive. Will discuss that tonight at the conclusion of the day.

Friday, June 08, 2012
13 visitors today. Trish, Shelby, and Kaitlyn; Lucy and Rylan came to swim, eat hot dogs, and visit. All the kids seemed to enjoy themselves. Melissa, Austin, Cole, and Ben…all enjoyed swimming.

Steve Webb came by the house to cut the grass around 11:30. I told him that I had friends arriving around 12:00. He said that he would return Monday, but wanted to make sure that I would tell David I had sent him home.

I don’t know why Grace feels compelled to have a friend spend the night every night and I don’t know why I always agree, but…Maddie Brown, Grace’s niece, along with her brother, Dakota, came over this evening around 5:00. Christy dropped them off and said that they needed to be home no later than Tuesday. Don’t know where that came from, but they will go home Sunday as Grace begins horse camp on Monday.

Maddie is spending the night and Dakota went home to spend the night with Austin and Cole.

As an elementary school teacher, I feel the need to be a positive role model for children; except when I use “bad words” occasionally. Maybe that's why I allow the constant flow of traffic through my house. Who knows. The visitors; some invited and others not, continue to arrive. Lucy asked me today if I would miss all the chaos and confusion that goes on here, when everyone is gone. I didn’t know how to answer.

For now though and for the purposes of this blog, a total of 132 visitors in 14 days

Thursday, June 7, 2012

The morning began with 2 visitors in the house; Katie and Cole. Even when deciding on sleeping arrangements prior to going to bed, changes are made at the last minute. I slept with Cole in Grace's bed, David and Grace slept in our bed, Isabell and Mandy slept in her bed, and Katie slept on the couch.

The poor night's sleep caught up with me around 1:30 and I laid down to take a nap. I slept until 2:30 while Melissa and Mandy were out at the pool with Katie, Grace, Austin, Cole, and Isabell. I woke up, had a cup of coffee, and began getting things together for the night's swim meet. Getting change for the concession stand, ice for the coolers, and snacks for Grace provided my body with enough physical movement that within minutes, I was busy again. Or...it could have been the coffee.

Katie's mom (Julie) picked her up around 6:00.

We swam against Cleveland and don't even know who won. The collection of DQ's were still sitting on the scorer's table when I left around 9:40 PM. Grace invited Mattie to spend the night and I agreed, but at the last minute she was feeling sick and went home. I almost felt a sense of relief, but hope that Mattie is okay.

Although typically not accustomed to using any “bad words” on a regular basis; caught completely off guard by a plastic fishing pole pelting me in the arm while out by the pool, reading the newspaper, and in my own little world I said, “Oh shit, who the hell did that?” Quickly Ben (Austin’s friend) pointed to Austin as if he was scared to death that I would kill him. Austin admitted to throwing the fishing pole and slowly walked toward me to retrieve it. With his head held down, I knew he hadn’t meant to hit me with the fishing pole. He said, “I’m sorry Nanar.” I accepted his apology, went back to reading my newspaper, and gave Melissa a wink.

Madi spent the night with Grace, Austin and Cole as well. Melissa arrived around 11:00 with Ben (Austin’s friend and sister) Sophie. Swimming and pizza again in the afternoon. May buy some stock in Little Caesar’s Pizza. Madi’s mom (Suzanne) arrived around 1:00 just as I was returning with pizza. Suzanne had her dog with her and had just received shots at the vet. Madi was hungry so I sent her home with a slice of pizza and a bottled water. Gave the dog a Pupperoni.

Kay visited for a while and talked to Austin and Cole by the pool. She said that she would fix pork chops when they came over again.

Arnold visited with David for a while and helped him to unload tools from the back of his truck. He had a bottled water and sat on the back porch. Arnold’s health continues to improve and he seems to be getting stronger each day. His recovery from cancer seems to be good.

Cleaned the inside of my car today. Isabell had spilled a bottle of cream soda in the seat last week and the dry sticky residue on the door was beginning to shimmer when I opened the door. I didn’t mind seeing the visible soda stains running down the door until I couldn’t tell the difference between the nose prints from the dog on the window and the soda stains. It’s somewhat clean now.

Little David arrived around 6:30 parking his truck in front of the house. He said that he thought I might need something to blog about. He stayed for a while, then borrowed Mandy’s car to go get his oldest daughter, Katie and her dog Scottie.

Total visitors to date:113 and 6 dogs

Tuesday, June 05, 2012
The morning was quiet. Two cups of coffee and a trip to Burger King to pick up a newspaper from the stand. Tried to complete the Word Jumble but I was distracted by the blog I hadn’t completed the night before. Quickly went to work trying to remember some of the previous day’s activities.

Mandy brought Melissa, Austin, and Cole to the house around noon. Melissa got on the computer to obtain updates from Facebook; I had my back turned washing dishes at the sink when I heard Melissa yell, “OMG Cole!” I quickly turned around and Melissa was hitting Cole in the back with her flip-flop. I said, “What are you doing?” She replied, “There’s a huge spider on his back.” The third whack killed the spider and it’s crumpled body fell to the floor. Melissa immediately returned to the computer as if she had never been interrupted by the incident.

Harlee and Cheyenne visited for a while then returned home.

Spaghetti for dinner and on my way to pick up Grace and Madi from swim practice.

Jo was over with her dog Baby when I returned. We visited for a while. She left after Baby was shocked by the electric fence and returned with Angus (her other dog).

Two full weeks of my summer vacation and a total of 102 visitors and 4 dogs.
Monday, June 4, 2012

During the course of the day, and in between Grace deciding that she wanted to take up rock climbing, we had several visitors. Grace began the day by climbing the 5 foot brick wall that leads up to the railing on our front porch. After she had mastered that small feat, she decided to climb the 12 foot wood fence at the back corner of our pool. She propped a ladder against a post and tied a piece of twine around one column. The twine would help her maintain her grasp through the rough spots. After several failed attempts to scale the wall, she gave up and decided to play with Harlee and Cheyenne.

Mandy picked up Melissa, Austin, and Cole and returned around 10:00. Even if the visitors don’t have transportation; it’s likely they will find a way to get here.  Melissa left to go to the grocery store while Grace, Austin, and I ran several errands getting ready for the nights swim meet.

When we returned, Christy was at the house dropping off Dakota and Maddie. Melissa had agreed to watch them while Christy went to a class at Chatt. State.

While Mandy left to get her daily bag of ice, and while on my watch, Isabell managed to color nearly every inch of the front side of her body with permanent markers. The array of different colored circles, squiggles, and “I’s” looked like she had been decorated with a mosaic of colored tiles. Mandy was a little upset and said that I would be responsible for washing it off, for which I replied, “It will wear off.”

8 corndogs later, along with…applesauce, a liter of juice, a box of Cheese-Its, a box of fruit snacks, numerous cheese sticks and yogurt tubes; Grace, Harlee, Cheyenne and I were off to the swim meet.

A fun night and we won the swim meet against Fort Oglethorpe!

Sunday, June 3, 2012
And so the day ends with two visitors in the house. I don’t know if they will be spending the night tonight or not, and with my bedroom door closed and the bubbles blowing in the fish tank; I will find out in the morning if the visitors stayed through the night.

Jo (Harlee’s Mom and next door neighbor as well) came over around 11:00 last night after a trip to Wal-Mart. Grace and Harlee had purchased a t-shirt and were going to paint it for Drew (Harlee’s Dad) for his birthday. I told them we had grand-kids in the bed, and they went to Harlee’s to paint a shirt. I will add her to the visitor count.

Today, Arnold was the first visitor of the day, he stayed for a few minutes; David left with Grace to visit Roy and Ann so I could finish this week’s homework assignment. When they returned, Grace had a beautiful bouquet of flowers arranged in a small glass vase. She talked about going for a walk, picking flowers with Ann, and listening to stories. There’s something to be said about stories. We will remember stories that have been told and shared for generations to come.

When Harlee came over today and I mentioned my Blog, she said that I couldn’t count her because she lived here too. Most the time she does, but for the purposes of the visitor count; she does have a home next door.

Harlee returned in the evening with Cheyenne and Jo. They visited for a while, talked about their trip to Michigan, and about Harlee driving in a cemetery. Jo said, “well… she wouldn’t kill anybody.”

Harlee and Cheyenne plan to spend the night tonight. Oh yea…I forgot to mention that last night when Jo, Harlee, and Grace went to Wal-Mart, they brought their dog Angus over for a visit. They left him in the fence overnight and he spent the night with Jenny and Lucy. Before long, I may need to keep track of the visitors that come to see our dogs.

All in all, that’s an additional 5 visitors today and another dog; making 87 visitors and 2 dogs.

Saturday, June 02, 2012

A few hours of solitude was just enough time to walk 2 miles, paint a small gate, and take a shower before my first visitor of the day arrived, Isabell. Can’t count her though as she lives here. She came in the bathroom following my shower and climbed into the sink to sit while I tried to put a few dabs of make-up on my face.

Billy arrived around 9:00 AM and he and David left together to run a few errands. I worked in the yard most of the day trimming hedges and pulling weeds from around shrubs.

Jason and a friend of his came to pick up Isabell around 2:00 PM. She did not want to leave with him and Mandy finally agreed (with some coercion from me) to go with them to get an ice-cream. She also agreed to pick up some pine bark to freshen up the landscaping around the house.

Harlee (one of our next door neighbors) came over. She and her mother have been in Michigan for about 3 weeks. She said she missed us terribly and wanted to go the ball game with us. We left around 5:30 to watch Austin and Cole’s baseball game. Their team won 17/11. Afterwards, we went to Sonic consuming several foot long hotdogs, cokes, and Sonic Blasts.

After we ate, Melissa, Jeff, Austin, and Cole came to the house for a visit. They left shortly after 10:00 PM.

8 visitors today, 82 in all.

Friday, June 1, 2012

The day is ending much quieter that it started. Grace has gone to Lake Winnie with Austin and Cole, and Isabell is playing in the garage with her Mom, oh…her friend tonight. Her name is friend.

At 7:15 AM the sound of a loud diesel engine rattled the windows of the house as it pulled up the driveway. Little David arrived in his Semi-Truck to take Grace and Maddie to swim practice (at Grace’s request the previous night). He left around 8:15 and I followed behind planning to take the final shirt orders from swim team parents.

When I returned home, the cold rain on the first day of June had chilled my bones and all I could think about was a nice pair of warm sweat pants and a comfortable sweater. Cole and Dakota had spent the night before and were in the house on the laptop. Melissa and Austin came over as she was on her way to the car emissions checking station. Austin wanted to stay and play with Dakota.

David arrived around noon with Brandon (a guy who works with David). Isabell, Dakota, Maddie, Grace, and Cole were in the garage singing “I’m sexy and I know it” using the end of a paint pole as a microphone. David told Brandon to wait here while he and I went to the bank. We were gone about 5 minutes. I’m sure Brandon appreciated that.

Kay (Austin and Cole’s other grandmother) arrived to discuss the incidents of yesterday’s happenings. She stayed for a while visiting on the back porch. Her hands trembled showing her age as she retrieved her keys prior to leaving.

Arnold came around 5:00 to visit, talking about the visitors at his house. He said he needed to get away. Imagine that!

Melissa arrived with Jeff around 5:00 after deciding to go to Lake Winnie (a local amusement park). Grace should return around 10:00 tonight.

Candy (Maddie’s Mom) arrived to pick up her daughter around 5:15 along with Christy who picked up Dakota about the same time.

Lots of traffic, so many visitors I am almost losing track of the numbers in and out of the house.

11 visitors today, 74 in all.
